Query from Trinidad & Tobago seeking good practices in community safety and enhancement.
Beverly Chase, UNDP Trinidad & Tobago
Dear Colleagues:
The Ministry of Community Development in Trinidad and Tobago has implemented a Community Safety and Enhancement Programme over the past 6 years to assist with addressing the increasing incidences of crime. The Ministry is seeking to restructure the initiative and is looking for good practices to inform this process.
Please share experiences and/or suggestions on the following:
- · Models used to address crime and violence in communities
- · Initiatives to address gang related crime
- · Mobilization techniques used to encourage participation of groups or individuals in crime prevention initiatives
- · Production of Crime Prevention Handbooks for communities and other similar communication tools
With thanks and appreciation.

Hi Sandra,
I have been using parenting education, skills training, family mediation therapy and youth empowerment strategies to assist parents, children and authorities to foster good interpersonl relationships and communication . Over 80% of approximately three hundred families seen yearly have positively changed their values and attitudes.
The services are facilitated through a young NGO in Portmore of which I am the Founder. This organization is partnering with schools, SDC and The Community Safety and Security in Portmore to prevent crime and violence.
The limitation for increase in service is unavailability of financial support to employ facilitators in addition to the few volunteers who keep the door of the organization open.
I am suggesting that more consideration should be given to NGOs who are really assisting families to make a difference in their lives. The possibility of addressing more issues of families will reduce the level of crime and violence in society.
