crime prevention

I must commend the MNS for taking the lead in developing a Crime prevention and community safety plan.  It is a very necessary document and should seek to represent the interest of all sectors and the constituents they serve.  As a social worker and a member of the Jamaica Association of Social Workers we advocate for the protection of the most vulnerable - women, children, the aged and the mentally and physically challenged.  It is from this premise that such a plan needs to have its genesis and that is why it is so important for those groups' interests to be represented.  The statistics are glaring in that the age group 17-24 years are the ones committing the most crime.  Based on successes of youth groups, LEAP Centre, Opportunities Unlimited and Children First what has been the basis of your success and how can this be replicated.

Our recent conferences of the JASW (Social Workers) in Mandeville and Kingston show that social workers are doing a tremendous job in several agencies. The documented work needs to be shared between agencies, so our best practices can be identified and replicated.  The conference also showed that socialworkers need to develop documentation - WRITE!. perhaps we need an initiative just to help individuakls to do this. an dthen have local live forums to discuss.

The door is now wide open, and I urge social workers to use fora such as these (COP) to continue the dialogue, and as a way of stimulating more professional growth among us; literally keeping the fires burning!

I agree Sandra, as we are scrambling aropund for solutions, and certain direction - we definitely would like to hear what strategies have worked and why. what are the components that have found resonance in our communities, and therefore what can and should be replicated?
